- Started programs that focused on the development of China, centered on the rapid industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture

- Emphasized heavy industry and infrastructure over consumer goods.

THE GREAT PROLETARIAN CULTURAL REVOLUTION
- Supported women's rights, introduced marriage laws that prohibited child/forced marriages & eliminated traditional practices such as foot binding.
- Any intellectuals associated with foreign & bourgeois values vistimized by the Red Gaurd.
- Red Guard humiliated, persecuted, and killed victims.
- Broke the education system, set China years behind.
Deng xiaoping
- Subjected to humiliation and labor in the Cultural Revolution.
- Entered China into global economic trading systems.
Tiananmen Square
- Deng sent students overseas to rebuild China's elite.
- Students were exposed to democracy, and protested in Tiananmen Square.
- Deng Xiaoping was wary of revolution after the Cultural Revolution and ordered a hostile retaliation.
